I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE

Yonkers Arts is proud to have presented this collaborative Fall Exhibition titled 'I Am Because You Are'.

The exhibition was curated in collaboration with Roddy Wildeman of Warburton Galerie and Joe Corbalis of the Blue Door Art Center.

The theme of the show is based on the South African concept of 'ubuntu'. It’s a compact term from the Nguni languages of Zulu and Xhosa that carries a fairly broad English definition of “a quality that includes the essential human virtues of compassion and humanity”. The concept comes from the Zulu phrase 'umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu' which directly translated means that a person is a person through other people or, more commonly, 'I am because you are'.
